Doc Talk

For the LOVE WEEK version of  Doc Talk, we are going to take a look at some advice on sprucing up your libido just in time for Valentine’s Day. Just don’t forget to consult with your health care provider before starting any new health practices.

Dr. Cathy Wong, ND, CNS, is a licensed naturopathic doctor and an American College of Nutrition-certified nutrition specialist.  The author of  The Inside-Out Diet: 4 Weeks to Natural Weight Loss, Total Body Health, and Radiance
has some interesting tips for bringing out your best in the bedroom.

Here’s what she recommends:

•  Chili Peppers

The chemical compound found in the spicy wonders is capsaicin.  First of all it speeds up blood flow; that alone can be a benefit when you need some help getting in the mood.  Additionally, the power-packed substance actually aids in releasing an endorphin similar to what the body experiences during arousal.  Keep in mind these things happen fast, so add jalapeno  cayenne, or habanero peppers whenever you need immediate help.

•  Dark Chocolate

Got antioxidants?  If not, try eating 1 ounce of dark chocolate a day to increase levels of nitric oxide, a chemical that promotes increased sexual function in both women and men.  Make sure you get good quality chocolate that is at least 60% pure cocoa.  Xocai is a great brand that I trust.

•  Muira Puama

This interesting substance comes from a Brazilian rain forest tree.  It is believed that it stimulates the production of testosterone and may even give your body help to elevate serotonin levels.  Be careful with this one as it could also elevate your blood pressure.  Make sure to consult your physician before taking it.

More Tips

Dr. Catherine Hood, M.D. has some solid advice for waking up a tired libido as well.  Catherine Hood is an honorary clinical lecturer at Oxford University in England and a fellow of Ethox, the Oxford Institute for Ethics and Communication in Health Care Practice.

Here’s her 5 tips for getting your sex on:

1.  Go light on the booze.  Though one drink is relaxing and can help set the mood, too much is a big no-no.  Alcohol is a depressant that will slow down the natural chemical processes of the body that heighten sexual function.

2.  Hood says that aphrodisiacs can be fun and effective.  Brightly colored foods and those that are sexually suggestive like asparagus or cucumbers just might do the trick.  Additionally, you can increase minerals, like zinc, that are  important for fertility by ingesting oysters.  Just try them; you might like them.

3.  Staying fit is an important part of our overall health.  It helps keep your whole body in tip-top condition, especially your circulatory system that takes that blood to the “special areas”.  Not to mention, when you feel good about yourself, you are more likely to be sexually active.

4.  “Gingko biloba.  This herbal remedy made from the leaves of the gingko biloba tree, is known to improve blood flow to the brain and sexual organs. It is thought to have an enhancing effect upon desire, excitement and orgasm.”

5.  Get your partner to give you a massage.  Touch increases blood flow to certain areas and will relax your mind as well.  Stress and tension are killers of the “mood”.

Well, there you have it, Ladies (and any Gentlemen who tagged along).  Give some or all of these sex drive-boosting tips a try and see what happens!  Everyone have a great LOVE WEEK and Valentine’s on Thursday.

About Kellie R. Stone

"I make no excuses for my diverse roles as a Rock Your Feminine Type Coach™ and Branding Expert, best-selling author, and crime thriller novelist. Yes, I do still chuckle a bit at the irony. I kick ass as a women’s biz coach by day and kill off vulnerable fiction characters at night. What the hell, it makes for some interesting dreams. I believe that everyone should pursue their passions no matter how out there they seem to be. One of those pure heart-fluttering passions for me has always been writing. Since I did, indeed, chase my dream of being a writer, I've published two non-fiction books in the self-development genre, co-authored an international best seller, and now I'm finally pushing my much-too-old-to-be-in-the-nest novel out the door and into the world. My whole world is empowering and I adore showing others how to live life unfiltered, whether I do that through the written word or my coaching work. I love my job!" ~Kellie R. Stone
