Could A Long Engagement Be Better For Your Relationship?

speedy engagement might be the best choice for some people, depending on their situation. But there are many couples who believe a long engagement could be just the thing to ensure that their relationship lasts. Is it possible that spending more time in the in-between state of engagement can make your relationship stronger? Let’s take a look at some strong points in favor of it.

Long Engagement Point #1: More Time May Mean Having the Wedding of Your Dreams

The average time between getting engaged and getting married is usually about a year, as advised by many relationship experts. Couples may also choose the long engagement because it takes some financial preparation and planning to create a desirable wedding event. Waiting may give you more time to discuss what you both want from the wedding. It might even allow you to save more money to have the wedding just as you want it instead of settling for something less. Rushing into a wedding that isn’t really what you want could create resentment and discord in the relationship.  You don’t want to have a feeling that you have missed out on your dream wedding years later.

Long Engagement Point #2: Less Resentment and Regret

Rushing into a wedding that isn’t really what you want could create resentment and discord in the relationship.  You don’t want to have a feeling that you have missed out on your dream wedding years later. Regret can haunt you for the rest of your life. Whatever you decide and no matter what your budget is, make sure you both get the most important elements from your big day, even if you can’t afford the huge celebrity-style wedding. You can choose to splurge on these select items.

Long Engagement Point #3: More Time – Less Stress

Knowing you have ample time to make things just right takes much of the stress out of wedding planning. However, you can still get many things done early on in the engagement if you’re dying to get the ball rolling. In fact, many elements of the event will need to be chosen as much as a year in advance. Quality venues and good wedding professionals will book up fast, so you want to reserve them quickly. You could even kick start the plans by sending out some luxury save the date cards to your guests. With some of the pre-planning underway, your nerves will calm down and allow you to enjoy each other even more during your special time as an engaged couple.

Long Engagement Point #4: Reveals Potential Problems

Some people believe that a long engagement can harm your relationship. Their main argument is that it could expand flaws in each other and the relationship. However, these “flaws” were likely already there but, for some reason, had not had light shed on them. A long engagement can give you more time to either work through any issues or gain clarity about whether you are right for one another. Perhaps that would be better than rushing into marriage to find out that he or she wasn’t the one for you.

So basically, slow down and enjoy the time that you are engaged. It is an important time in your relationship. Getting married should never be treated as a fix for problems. Take your time to get clarity about the reasons you want to marry your partner.
