Fortunate Friday: My Patients

A Thankful Moment

Today, I went to the bank to deposit some money.

Income money, that is.

While watching the bank clerk counting the change (pennies included), I had a wave of gratefulness wash over me.  Gratefulness for the patients who are helping me stay in practice.  Gratefulness for patients like the one lady who only makes $15,000 a year, yet she wrote me a check for $200 because her insurance did not cover her visits to see me. She chose to pay me for my services. Others don’t.  I usually don’t let it go to collection.

As a physician, I take whatever amount of money people give me for my services.  If they tell me they don’t have the money to cover their bill, what is there to do?  What will submitting their debt to collection going to accomplish? If they don’t have it, they don’t have it.

God will provide; He’s brought me thus far.

One Step…and Then Another

Watching the clerk count the pennies made me feel such tenderness for the people who work so very hard, who pay their bills even if it means counting penny by penny. They help me continue to help them (and others).

Not only that, but they help me continue to educate myself about cutting edge medicine (has anyone read Suzanne Sommer’s new book, Knockout: Interviews with Doctors Who Are Curing Cancer–And How to Prevent Getting It in the First Place (Hardcover); as well as learning about OLD medical systems, such as Ayurveda and the Chinese principles of energetic meridians.

I have patients who cannot afford to pay a $20 copay all at once, and I have patients who are financially comfortable.  However, even the people who are financially stable have worked hard to get there.  I respect people’s money because I know how difficult it is to make it.  Most people don’t inherit their wealth, and honest wealth doesn’t come easy (I think).

So, I prayed a blessing for my patients, as I saw the clerk go through the checks and the pennies.

It Changed Me

I was a different person by the time I left the bank. Somehow, I felt renewed, like my eyes had been opened.  It’s good to remember that we cannot make it on our own; let’s help each other on this journey called life.

Let’s pray for those who help us do what we love to do; let’s pray for those who sow, and harvest, and transport the food we put on the table. Let’s pray for those workers who keep the roads in good condition. Let’s be grateful.

Fortunate Friday: Direction

Lost and Found

Have you ever been lost in a strange city or even in your own town?  It happens; and when it does, it can be terrifying.  You’re lucky if someone nice is available to help you find your way.  I remember being lost in a not-so-nice part of town years ago – before cell phones.  I was scared and didn’t even want to ask for directions, as the people looked as though they couldn’t care less about my predicament. Thankfully, I was able to read the signs and determine the direction in which I was traveling.  It was only minutes before I recognized a landmark and could navigate my way home.  My mom had taught me to pay attention to where I was at all times.  It paid off that day.

The Blog Compass

Lately, I’ve been thinking about the direction of this blog.  I often wonder if WLL is lost and meandering around an unknown part of the blogosphere without a compass.  I have to admit when I started it, I really had a sketchy idea of how it would develop; I was all over the board with posts about anything I could think of.  It’s a little better now.  At least I know that natural health and beauty is a direction worth going in.  But I’m still looking for that perfect niche that sets us on top.  Are we lost?  No.  Do we need to locate ourselves?  Yes.  Daily.  Hopefully you got the little life-lesson in my example.

So, today, I’m fortunate for having some direction.  Was there a time in your life when you lacked direction- physically, mentally, or spiritually?  Please share.  Be well-be beautiful.

Fortunate Friday: Adaptability

When things change in our lives (purposely or not), we have two choices; we can refuse to accept the circumstances and fight them, or we can go with the proverbial flow.  Of course, different events cause varying reactions.  Not to mention personality can play a role in emotions and actions.  And, though it can be impossible to predict how you would react in adverse situations; you can access your past reactions to understand yourself a little better.  I have acquired adaptability over the years, as I’ve found that it is the best way to make it through life without damaging your health with stress and worry; for this, I am fortunate.

We Can Learn From Animals

This week our beloved cat sustained an unknown trauma that severely dislocated and broke one of his back legs.  We rushed him to the emergency animal hospital only to learn that the options were a $2000 surgery to repair the leg or an amputation that would be only a few hundred dollars.  Well, this really wasn’t a choice for us, as  we simply did not have the money to pay for the reconstruction surgery.  So, we took him to our vet the next day and they scheduled the amputation.

Hunky (our cat) is extremely active and loves to roam the area and look for adventures (and mice).  We worried that he would be unable to do anything once his leg was gone.  However, the vet assured us that he would adapt and be fine with his new situation.  Today, he is home and has already been walking around (more like hopping) and actually jumped on the bed by himself.  It’s a true example of adaptability.  If only we humans could do so well with change.

The key to this ability to adjust is in the brain – thoughts.  We have to do what is required to get the job done and not think about how hard or different it is.  Like the three-legged cat that doesn’t dwell on emotions and pain, we must rely on our instinct of survival.  We can’t lay down and give up because it hurts.

Think about a situation in which you experienced great change.  What did you feel and how did you react?  Tell us your story.  Be well-be beautiful.

Fortunate Friday: Hope

What is Hope and Why Do We Have It?

There is record of the word hope in English, though in varying form, dating back to before the twelfth century and even earlier in Hebrew.  I have a good feeling that even before there was a word, there was an action- a longing, an expectation, an anticipation.  It’s like the human equivalent of an animal’s instinct- a built in feature.  Not to say that animals don’t hope and humans don’t have instinct.  It could be that both of these things are interchangeable and innate with all life.  We need hope to live, thrive, and find our purpose.  That is why I am fortunate to have it.

A Woman’s Hope Is Powerful

Remember when you were waiting on that special guy to pop the question or expecting your first child?  Can you recall dreaming or even visualizing these important events when you were a teen or even a young girl?  Through hope we actually begin to form our lives from the beginning.  We form ideas about what we want to do, who we want to be, what kind of marriage, children, and career we want.  And, though, every whim that we have along the way doesn’t come to pass (thank God), we generally have a pretty good outline of our futures by the time we are a young adult.  Hope moves women to make things better in their homes and in all the businesses and organizations in which she works.  It’s powerful.

What Happens If We Don’t Have It?

Because of the immense power that hope has, if a person loses it, that is when despair enters.  With nothing to look forward to and no way of changing things, women (humans) get introvert and depressed.  This is a dangerous place to be.  I’ve been there myself.  Even having faith in God, hope_by_ingrid_sevenI have found myself in despair and loneliness.  The lack of hope is a state of mind that manifests in actions; just as having it manifests in actions.  Usually, the loss of hope is temporary.  However, occasionally, it can be a chronic condition that doesn’t end well.  I believe this is why an individual gets to a place where they can take their own life.

How Do I Get It and Keep It?

First of all, you have to understand that hope is something that is bigger than us.  It’s a product of spirit and soul.  For me, trusting that I am a part of something greater than myself; that I am a child of God; that I can get intuitive answers to my questions are all huge reasons that I have general hope.

Everyday hope is somewhat different.  You hope that your children don’t get the flu; you hope that you get the promotion; you hope that you have enough money to pay your bills.  This is where the action comes in.  We tend to have more hope in the things that we’ve acted on positively.  For example, you feed your kids healthful foods, teach them hygiene, and give them what they need; the fact that you’ve done these “actions” provides a substance that supports hope.  Doing the opposite negative things like letting them live on sugar and fat, not teaching appropriate cleanliness, and not giving them a clean environment in which to live would not give you the same substantial reason to expect a good outcome.

In conclusion, we can say that hope is a necessary part of our lives as women, mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, and mentors.  We must learn to draw on the strength of a greater power; we must act on our expectations; and we must not give up hope when things don’t happen the way we think they should.  What are you hoping for?  Be well-be beautiful.

Fortunate Friday: You Tell Us

Hi, Ladies!  I need to be very brief today.  I am helping a good friend with a big grand opening of her swanky salon.  BTW, it’s DC Hair Lounge in Indianapolis; the opening starts at 6:58 PM on Saturday October 3, 2009.  All of you Indy gals (and guys) are welcome to come.  Between the shopping, decorating, getting my hair done, and taking care of the Missy Moo (toddler girl), I am spread a little thin today.  So, I wanted to share one short thing that makes me feel fortunate this fine Friday morning.  I have not had a headache for over a week!   Yes, it’s true!  I switched one med and received a box crammed with migraine relief products from, Shelly, my friend from Joyful Girl Naturals.  Needless to say, it’s been a terrific week!

Also, thank you to everyone who entered the September giveaway.  I will be announcing the winner very soon.  Good luck to you all!

Having said that, I would like to ask you beautiful women out there to tell WLL and our audience what you are fortunate to have in your life.  This can be anything that you are thankful for, a person, pet, health, possession; this is your chance to spill it.  Make me proud ladies!  I need you to fill the comments up as fast as you can.  Be well-be beautiful.

Fortunate Friday: Law of Attraction

I’m finding, more and more, that what I focus on, what I dream of, and in whatever I put forth effort, seems to be manifesting in my life.  This makes me happy; and for this fact, I am fortunate.  It’s not a complicated 132 step process that brings a woman’s dreams to fruition, but rather, her concentrated decision to be creatively and emotionally connected to whatever it is that she wants.

Happy Vibes

In case you didn’t know, we are electrical beings.  Yes, we have enough power running through our bodies to put the electric companies out of business, if that was our purpose;  thankfully, its not.  We have much more exciting things to do than power up a lamp.  The problem is we need to figure out what purposes are out there for us and walk toward them – with diligence.  When we make the connection, we can then send forth our unique happy vibes, prayers, meditations, or whatever you choose to call them.

What You Put Out There Comes Back

When we send out these thoughts and actions in a frequency of love and peace, they come back with an even greater force.  This is not only a physical law but a spiritual one, regardless of what religion you cling to.  A good example of this is my blog.  I have chosen to send out good, positive information to the lovely women whom I would not have met otherwise.  All of the love and friendship that I have sewn has come back to me and is still coming!  This is the law of attraction.

I’m currently dreaming and visualizing having a lucrative writing career through this blog and other projects.  I visualize the blog traffic, meeting with agents and publishers, seeing my books on the shelves of book stores, my book launch party, speaking at women’s conferences, and even traveling to other countries because of my website.  It will happen.

What Are You Dreaming About?

You tell us what your greatest dreams are and what you are doing to manifest them.  Women’s Life Link needs your comments and stories to fill in the blanks.  Spill it, Ladies!  Be well-be beautiful!

Fortunate Friday: Resources

What if you had no way to reach family or friends; what if you couldn’t get where you needed to be; and what if you didn’t have resources for your needs and wants?  It really is hard to imagine living a life where nothing came easily, where literally you had to beg, steal, or borrow everything.  I’ve been poor, but I can’t say that I’ve ever been to that horrible place.

Especially in the technological era that we are in, there are numerous ways in which to reach out, give, receive, pay, buy, blog, bitch, and even cheat on your taxes (or your spouse).  So, today, I’m thankful for resources (not to cheat, by the way) and am fortunate to have such wonderful avenues of expressing myself and, well, for just living.

Just for fun, try to visualize what it would be like without the Internet, cell phones, banks, cars, electricity, running water, planes, and medical technology; then, I want you to think about the millions of people around the world who don’t have any or few of these things.  You and I are fortunate.  Be well-be beautiful.

Fortunate Friday: My Author Panel

You know what?  I’m the luckiest blogger in the world to have so many beautiful, talented, and professional women contribute to this web site.  I realize that most blogs function with one person at the keyboard; however, I wanted to do things a little differently.  Although I’d love to think that “I’m all that”, frequent reality checks reveal that’s not the case.  I need help, advice, friendship, support, and a kick in the ass just like every other woman on the planet.  Trust me, you might think that this writing stuff is easy, but it takes dedication and more time than my Missy Moo (toddler girl) likes.  So, today, I am fortunate for knowing these beautiful women, my colleagues, my friends, my fellow health advocates.

Donna Martelli – She one heck of a personal trainer, ballet instructor, and foxy lady for her age (Don’t worry, Donna, I won’t tell).  She has a knack for yanking the slack out of anyone who steps foot into her studio.  A true woman of wisdom in many areas who I’m proud to call my best friend.  You should see what she’s up to.  Take a peek at one of her articles, Boxes and Molds.  Please visit her personal sites to find out why I love this woman so much.  Beautiful Bodies FitnessBeautiful Feet Dance MinistryYour Custom Nutrition.

Dr. Anca Lamse, M.D. – What a master mind in the realm of healthy living.  She is amazing.  I’ve never seen an M.D. who regards a holistic approach to healing like she does.  A gem…a rare one.  She also has an arsenal of essential oils that you would only find in the cupboard of an aromatherapist.  I’ve tried some of her formulas; nothing short of brilliant.  You’ll see what I mean when you talk to her.  Yes, call her, email her, visit her site; you won’t regret it;  Lamse Wellness Clinic. Also, if you haven’t already, please read her article, Common Foods: Gateway Drugs.

Dr. Terri Hawkins-Fox, N.D., Ph.D. - I really don’t know what I did to deserve the seemingly endless supply of information that she throws my way.  She lives health and wellness; she is the real deal that you don’t find in every office of a health care practitioner.  I actually can’t wait to get her articles because they are life-changing.  If you don’t visit her site, Natural Rejuvenation, you’ll be missing an opportunity to be a healthier you. By the way, she has written some awesome articles here at WLL; read this one, Relationships: Giving and Receiving.

“When virtue and modesty enlighten her charms, the lustre of a beautiful woman is brighter than the stars of heaven, and the influence of her power it is in vain to resist.”

˜Akhenaton (King of Egypt, 14th century BC)

Jeffrie Ann Hall – I’ve never known someone who could talk about androgens, collagen, and fibroblasts and keep me interested all the way through to the end of the article.  Don’t get me wrong, I love reading about and telling women about skin care and great products; I just don’t use all the technical stuff to do it.  Well, she does…and it works.  Read, Elastin, to understand how great of a teacher she is.  She has lots of other talents too.  Just visit her site, Secret to Perfect Skin; you will see what I see.

Dr. Heidi Kline, D.C. – I was at her office yesterday.  She is a special chiropractor but even more special of a woman.  I’m just starting to get to know her, but it’s obvious to me that  she is and will be a key person in my life and in the future of this blog.  See for yourself.  Visit her professional site today; Chiropractic and Wellness Center.

Even more cool than having these five be a part of Women’s Life Link, there are more awesome women coming our way…very soon.  So, I hope you hang out with us on a regular basis.

You can also read more about the WLL authors on our about page and in the “Beautiful Women” interviews.  Show them some love as they have you.  Be well-be beautiful.
