4 Ways To Be Fashion-Fab Over 50

There was a time that hitting the big five-O was basically a fashion death sentence. It meant that you could no longer be hip, cool, or wear the things that made you feel sexy and beautiful. Women had to suddenly be proper, prim and aged in their dress, makeup, and hairstyle. I say, “Hell no to that!” Modern society has fortunately changed their view of what being middle aged is for women. The current trend is that, no matter what age, shape, or size you are, you wear whatever makes you feel like you and works with your specific body! Keeping this in mind, here are 4 ways to be fashion-fab over 50!

Be Fashion-Fab over 50 #1: Always Be Yourself

The number one thing to remember for over 50 fashion is to be yourself. For that matter, it’s a great plan for women of all ages. There is a time to be inspired by others you see in magazines or other media, however, make an attempt to make it your own. Add your signature by wearing at least one thing that is all you. This might be a specific piece of jewelry, a scarf, or even a certain type of jacket. Remember, over 50s fashion really has nothing to do with your age if it’s tailored to your personality and style. I don’t believe in rules that demand you to wear certain things or not others. That said, we still need to be conscious of how our clothes fit our body. In other words, that short skirt might not look as good on you as it did when you were 25. Be yourself, but be acutely aware of fit and what flatters.

Be Fashion-Fab over 50 #2: Choose Mostly Classic over Trendy

I know it seems that adopting the latest fashion trends should make you look and feel younger, but, unfortunately, they can make you look older. Trying too hard to look as young as your daughter is the perfect way to show your actual age. This is a time to use wisdom and caution about your fit and style choices. But do keep in mind you can still be yourself, have a unique style and look fabulous in timeless pieces. It doesn’t hurt to add a couple of trendy bobbles here and there for some youthful fun.

Be Fashion-Fab over 50 #3: Look to the Stars

Though I don’t usually follow celebs faithfully for fashion sense, it does help to check out some current magazines or hot websites for ideas. This goes double for we gals who are over 50. I think our fashion confidence can wane over time as we see our bodies change. Celebrities are generally in the public eye and must keep their look up-to-date and eye-catching. Not to mention, they have lots of people like stylists, image consultants, and personal assistants giving them style advice on a regular basis.

Be Fashion-Fab over 50 #4: Keep Things Fresh

One of the worst things that can happen as we age is to allow our wardrobe and look to get stale and dated. The truth is, though that pants suit and mullet might have had a place in 1985, they won’t fly in the twenty-first century.

If you are attached to the same hairstyle and clothing you had ten, fifteen, or twenty years ago, it’s time for a makeover, honey! Don’t be afraid to change things up regularly either. Choose hair, clothes, and accessories that can be worn in various ways to create drama and interest. Keep them guessing what you will show up in next! Most importantly, have fun and don’t worry about what others think so much.

About Kellie R. Stone

"I make no excuses for my diverse roles as a Rock Your Feminine Type Coach™ and Branding Expert, best-selling author, and crime thriller novelist. Yes, I do still chuckle a bit at the irony. I kick ass as a women’s biz coach by day and kill off vulnerable fiction characters at night. What the hell, it makes for some interesting dreams. I believe that everyone should pursue their passions no matter how out there they seem to be. One of those pure heart-fluttering passions for me has always been writing. Since I did, indeed, chase my dream of being a writer, I've published two non-fiction books in the self-development genre, co-authored an international best seller, and now I'm finally pushing my much-too-old-to-be-in-the-nest novel out the door and into the world. My whole world is empowering and I adore showing others how to live life unfiltered, whether I do that through the written word or my coaching work. I love my job!" ~Kellie R. Stone
