5 Tips For Working From Home Successfully

If you’ve always worked from home, you understand the importance of having a good home office. However, if you’re new to the remote working game, you might be struggling to operate successfully. Whether you are home due to choice or you have been ordered home from the recent pandemic guidelines, success depends on some key things. Let’s take a look at my top tips for working from home successfully.

Clear a Designated Work Space

If you have a spare room at home, whether it be a bedroom, sunroom, or basement, clear it out of junk and give it a deep clean so you’re starting with a blank canvas. If you don’t have a spare room you can use as an office, simply clear a corner that you can spare. Make sure you have the room for a desk, chair, and some storage for essentials. It would also help to have some privacy to minimize distractions. I once converted a dining room into a home office. It didn’t have doors so I hung long curtains at the doorways to create separation.

Find a Good Desk and Chair

A desk and a comfortable chair are the main pieces of furniture you need to work from home. If you’re only going to be working from home for a short period, you might not want to go crazy and spend a fortune but do choose something sturdy and comfortable.

When it comes to the chair, you want something that adequately supports your back and neck for hours at a time. If you aren’t able to get to a store to try out your choices in person, read online reviews thoroughly before you purchase.

Use an Updated, Quality Computer and Software

If your work isn’t providing a computer and you’re using your own, make sure it’s reliable and has all of the software you need. Keeping up with vital updates and antivirus software is a must. After all, you’ll be working with company information, accounts, or files.

Since much of our work is done online these days and completed through the cloud, there’s no risk of losing work due to computer breakdowns. However, this still is something that will affect your working day, so a fast, reliable machine is a home office essential.

Make Your Space Appealing

Keep your workspace clean and tidy, as well as decorate the way you like it. A few pictures, plants, and other personal items can help to achieve a creative touch.  If you’re going to be working from home long term and have a room you can turn into an office, consider redecorating it to further reflect your personality. Paint the walls an upbeat color yourself or have a pro do the work if you don’t have time. You can click here to find out more.

Consider making a rest space as well. Rooms that have a lot of windows with views can be wonderful spaces for work breaks and inspiration. Companies like sunroom contractors in Natick, MA or ones near you can help you create this type of oasis.

Set Your Home Office Rules

Once you establish your space, set up some rules for yourself and your family to follow. Things like privacy, access, noise levels, and your time need to be considered when creating your rules. Be clear about your expectations verbally and post them where they are easily seen. The adults and children need to have these guidelines to respect that your space has changed.
