6 Helpful Items For Working Out At The Gym

The new year is upon us, and it’s time to start thinking about any changes you want to make. Those might include a new healthy eating plan or working out more. Regardless of the pandemic, some of you might even be considering heading to a local gym. If you are brave enough to even think about joining one right now with everything going on, I recommend being prepared by having exactly what you need for comfort, safety, and health. Here are just a few things that will help you make the most of working out at the gym.

Comfortable and Stylish Clothes

I highly recommend investing in some comfortable and stylish athletic wear for your trips to the gym. Choose pieces that make you feel pretty and happy. After all, it’s hard enough to actually work out where others can see you, let alone do it wearing frumpy, old sweats. Additionally, make sure your choices are breathable, form-fitting, and give you enough flexibility to move without restriction. It is also helpful to have at least 2 or 3 outfits, so you always have something to wear no matter what. Do opt for quality brands that will last longer since it is usually not cheap to replace.

Good Athletic Shoes

Whether you are a lifter, runner, or casual machine user, work out in supportive shoes that help you maintain balance throughout your workouts. As far as the cost of good athletic shoes, it all depends on the brand and how well they are constructed. While the majority of affordable brands will run you from $70 to $120, a custom pair of gym shoes can run upwards of $250. Make sure you get a good fit no matter how much you can spend. If you aren’t sure what type to get, you can ask a salesperson at the store or online.

Water Bottle

Always have water and snacks with you at the gym. It’s helpful to own at least one good water bottle that travels well and keeps your water cool. You can pick up a basic one or go all out with a Performa Custom water bottle. I have a Yeti® that I just love because it keeps my water cold and hot drinks hot for as long as I need them. My only problem is keeping track of mine! I’ve been known to leave it at various places like the gym, doctor’s office, and in a grocery cart.

Snacks or Protein Shake

Working out is hard work that requires energy. Though some people like to work out on an empty stomach, I believe we each have to discover what works for us. I prefer to have a snack about 20 minutes before and refuel as needed during and after. For this reason, I carry a small container with quality foods like nuts, fruit, and cheese. Additionally, having a protein powder that can be easily mixed is a good way to replenish energy immediately following a hard workout.

Shower Gear

You will want a towel, toiletries, a hairdryer, and anything else you need to look presentable if you aren’t able to go home after your workout. Even if you don’t have anywhere to be, you might want to avoid feeling sticky and opt to shower at the gym. Do also pack a small handtowel to carry with you as you workout. This is to wipe your hands and forehead as you sweat.

Safety Gear/Medications

Last, and certainly not least, you need to have personal protective gear. This includes a mask or two, hand sanitizer, and anything else that helps you to feel safe while in public. Also, for your general safety, make sure you have a medical ID bracelet on you if you have any conditions that might cause an emergency. Do carry with you any meds that you could need like those for heart conditions, high blood pressure, seizures, anxiety, etc.
