Boy, Did I Need a Day Off
Here it is 7-something PM, and I am just now posting. Well, I apologize for the delay, but honestly, I’m glad that 1) my Internet modem was down; 2) my laptop needs a new mother board; and 3) my husband took his laptop to work for a Power Point presentation; without those tools, there is no blogging. You see, though my web world came to a screeching halt, I got to spend a wonderful day of rest with my Missy Moo (the toddler girl) playing, eating, walking, and slumbering; which brings me to the topic of this post…rest and sleep.
Factually, I am not very good at resting…or sleeping, for that matter. I think my active mind has a looping mantra that plays 24/7. It says, “You will miss something if you sleep, nap, or just close your eyes for ten seconds.” It’s a constant battle. And the bad thing, I know how important sleep is to our bodies and our minds.
Stress and Sleep
Have you ever wondered why you have trouble sleeping when you’re stressed or overwhelmed? For one thing, your mind and emotions sort of call the shots when it comes to deciding what is important enough to lose sleep over. It can even be sub-conscious. When we are bogged down by endless “must dos”, we leave little room for shut down mode; the result is insomnia or the inability to fall asleep. It’s no wonder that millions of women all over the world turn to sleep aids for a good night’s rest.
Beauty Sleep
Likely every woman out there has either heard or said the words “I need to get my beauty sleep.” As cliche as it is; it’s VERY true! Without proper sleep and rest periods (mental and physical breaks) our bodies begin to break down at a much faster rate. Organs, cells, muscles, and your brain cells get overwhelmed when they cannot rest regularly. When you have half of your body’s necessary parts fighting for energy, what do you think happens to the not-so-important parts like your hair, nails, skin, and eyes? That’s right; they suffer…immensely.
Another Challenge
What I realized today was that I needed to slow down and do something different. I’ve been on auto-pilot for weeks now. Giving myself the ability to say “no” to the usual grind gave me a different perspective on just how busy I’ve become. As a part of my 90 Day Health Challenge, I am going to focus on getting more quality sleep and down time. Here are some things that help me:
1. Melatonin – Time Released (3mg) – This supplement is all-natural and is something that your body already produces. Try taking 3 mg. 30 minutes before your bedtime. It is said to help reboot your sleep cycles so you can again fall asleep normally. Give it a try if you suffer from mild sleep problems.
2. Deep-Breathing – Just 10 minutes of this healthy practice right before bed can alleviate some of the day’s stress and toxic overload.
3. Prayer and Meditation – When you intentionally focus on spiritual things, you temporarily push aside the body and mind – the culprits behind insomnia. Make a peaceful transition to sleep by being thankful and focusing on spiritual growth.
4. Music – If you love music, why not choose a blissful CD to listen to as you fall asleep. No hard rock here; instead put on a soothing jazz piece or an instrumental that makes you happy…and sleepy.
5. Let It Go - Make sure to process all of your fears and irritations before hitting the sack. In other words, don’t go to bed angry and with unresolved issues. Do what you can to put your mind and emotions at ease by journaling or making a list of what you intend to accomplish the next day. If something is really bothering you, try talking about it to a friend or family member.
There are many ways to combat insomnia and unrest on your own; however, you might consider consulting your health care provider if your symptoms are serious or persistent. I have nothing against sleep aids; I just think it’s worth exploring other options before diving into the land of Ambien or Trazodone. Please tell us your best “fall asleep” tips. Be well.

A woman’s quest for beautiful skin and for affordable, feel-good products to get her there is one that can be frustrating. Even with international accessibility at our fingertips, we can surf around the world only to still be disappointed in the selection (and price) of good, healthy products. Fortunately, for some that unsuccessful search inspires them to not only create their own but make a career out of it; as in the case of Tara Reynolds.
Growing Sacred Herbals
After continuous disappointment with skincare products that contained preservatives and other chemicals, Tara was forced to take action and make what she needed. “I started making my own products from scratch with fine ingredients like rich butters and oils and fine quality essential oils. What I found is that my skin had never looked or felt so good,” said the owner/founder of the four-year-old company, Sacred Herbals. A certified Herbalist and Aromatherapist, Tara is quite qualified to create products that not only promote beautiful skin but a healthy emotional and spirtual experience.
Spirit of Beauty, whose sweet impulses, Flung like the rose of dawn across the sea, Alone can flush the exalted consciousness With shafts of sensible divinity– Light of the world, essential loveliness. - Alan Seeger, Ode to Natural Beauty (st. 2)
My Own “Sacred” Experience
I was delighted to meet Tara via her blog and was immediately drawn to learn more about her line of organic beauty products. She graciously sent me one of her natural body scrubs to try. When the Cocoa Butter Walnut Body Scrub arrived, I couldn’t wait to get in the shower and try it.
First, I took in the comforting aroma of the patchouli, frankincense, cedar wood, lemon, orange, lavender, and mandarin essential blend that truly made my first experience with the product a pleasant one. Next, I scooped out the firm, well-packed scrub (not gushy and runny like some) and proceeded to swirl it onto my arms and chest area. Immediately, the tiny, ground pieces of walnut began to invigorate my skin with a gentle but effective exfoliation. I’ve used some scrubs that almost hurt to use, so I was glad when this one did its job without inflicting any pain.
Finishing up my total body experience with the scrub, I noticed the aromatherapy affect inside my shower. The scent was motivating and even a little sensual as, for me, patchouli can be. The product rinsed away well and left only a nice trace of the natural oils behind. After towel drying, I noticed how soft and smooth my skin felt. It was as if I had already put on lotion (a nice bonus I did not expect). I have now used the Walnut Scrub several times and couldn’t be happier with the results. It seems to get better every time! The only thing left to do is hurry up and purchase some of Tara’s other natural products.
What They Offer
On the Sacred Herbal site, you’ll find a “full line of skin, bath and body products developed with a standard of achieving nothing less than natural perfection,” as they state on their about page. Some of the products they offer are creamy whipped body butters, irresistible body scrubs, luxury bath bombs, seasonal silky lip balms, hand crafted and blended natural perfumes, exotic blended bath salts and more!

The Future of Anti-Aging
Ladies, here it is. I’m going to give you this information with a sincere hope that you believe it is real. Recently, I was told that there is technology coming as soon as early January 2010 that will change the anti-aging market as we know it. Part of it is already on the market through the 25-year-old company Nu Skin. Watch the following video for a little background on the scientific discovery I was turned on to.
Internal and external products that will actually replace the voids in our youth gene clusters is on the verge of hitting the market. Though I don’t understand all of the science behind this discovery, I do see how it is going to revolutionize anti-aging. If these products deliver what Nu Skin claims they will, women all over the world will finally behold the “fountain of youth” that has been elusive to say the least.
To age “gracefully,” as one Nu Skin distributor stated at the anti-aging seminar, “is something that everyone wants.” The now multi-billion dollar anti-aging industry stands to gain its momentum by 75% over the next 10 years by way of the large percentage of the population entering the more mature years that promote the desire to look younger.
I will be keeping up-to-date on the latest information as it is released and certainly pass it on to you. I know I am looking forward to trying more of Nu Skin’s products and learning more about the Age Loc technology. You can visit the Nu Skin website for prices and additional information. Let us know how you think this new line of anti-aging products might change your life. Be well-be beautiful.

Products and Gadgets
The search for the fountain of youth is never ending. Unfortunately, our flow of expendable cash for the quest is not…at least mine isn’t. I do believe in quality, however. Skimping on skin care and anti-aging is not an option for me as I care a great deal about my body. Having said that, I don’t mean that I will spend food money on products or services either. There is a balance that must come when investing in your health and beauty.
As I said in a previous post in this series, we will take a look at what I believe are quality products and one amazing anti-aging gadget that delivers the goods. Another thing I wanted to let you know is I don’t promote products and services on this site for the sake of content or for any revenue that I might eventually get. I will not even mention something unless I’ve used it or someone close to me has benefited from it. So, now that I’ve revealed my rule for product promotion, I can move on to the fun part…the products.
Topical Lifting Products
Reversing Gelee Lift – The first such product in this category that I ever used was Arbonne’s Reversing Gelee Lift. “This gel, with Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, a stable form of vitamin C, is readily absorbed by the skin and promotes production of collagen, elastin, and ground substance,” as stated on the Arbonne site. The product is great for every day use or for a night out when you want to look your best. The only draw back, the ”lift” is temporary. However, the botanically based product does give you a nice dose of vitamins and anti-oxidants. Not to mention it is affordable. ($45.00, Arbonne.com)
Technology for Your Skin
While attending an anti-aging seminar recently, I was introduced to an amazing gadget for your skin. It’s called the Galvanic Spa II byNu Skin. During the demonstration, I was relaxed- a little skeptical- but ready to see what the gizmo could do. She applied a topical gel to my face on one side and proceeded to move the hand held unit over the surface of my skin. I could feel tiny charges that reminded me of when your foot comes back from being numb except not quite that intense.
After finishing up the 2-part treatment on one side, I could definitely see a difference. My skin felt energized and firmer than the other did. Because I was going out after the seminar, I asked her to do the other side. It was amazing seeing both sides tight and refreshed. What’s more, the results were permanent. It’s been almost a week and I can still see the changes.
How It Works
The unit was designed to enhance and promote the deep absorption of products into the skin. That in itself is reason enough to use it; however, customers have noticed an incredible “side-effect” of the spa. Women and men all over (like me) are watching their faces transform before their eyes. Wrinkles are smoother and less noticeable; skin is tighter; and tone is improving.
The Galvanic Spa uses micro-currents that are low voltage but high frequency. Angalena Davis, from Nu Skin explains it this way. “We have two repelling charges that are repelling each other and that’s how we are driving these ingredients into the skin.” The system is made to use on the face, body, and even the scalp. Each area of the body is treated with its own special contouring attachment that comes with the system.
Nu Skin has special gels that accompany the system and can be purchased as needed. I believe that this unit is a wonderful addition to any woman’s personal skin care protocol. And for those of you who spend a lot of money and time on your beauty, I definitely think you will find it well worth the price of $300.00. For more information about the Galvanic Spa II system, contact Dr. Terri Hawkins-Fox.
Please let us know if you try any of the products we recommend. Your stories are important to this website. Giving Women Everywhere the Power to Say “No” to the Knife
This week we will be focusing on our “mugs”. That’s right, our faces. We are going to take a look at some things you can do for the gal who’s staring back at you in the mirror. Some of these techniques are down home remedies; some are a little more sophisticated; and some are so high tech that you will barely believe they are possible until you try them.
I’m sure most women have daydreamed in the mirror about what their face might look like after a face lift.
”Just a little lift there, just a pinch off here, maybe an eye job will do nicely, too.”
Listen real closely; you can almost hear the longing murmurs, the wishing groans, the slight sound of women’s fingers gently pulling up their neck skin all over the world. Let’s face it, we all want healthy, happy, and young-looking skin. And, we will do almost anything to get it…if you can afford it, that is. Yes, there are those who have and will enter the office of a plastic surgeon some time in their lives. I’m not going to bash the cosmetic surgery industry; that’s not my style. What I am going to do is share some alternatives to the knife. Follow us this week for five “No Surgery Face Lift” treatments that actually work.
The first DIY treatment that I just LOVE is one that has ancient roots in Eastern cultures. I have spoken about Body Reflexology in previous posts, but I didn’t really give you any details about using it for beauty. Though there are many other wonderful ways to get glowing, beautiful skin, (we will talk about them this week) this easy-to-do method gives you results without any cost. You read that right! It’s free…if you DIY. All you need is your fingers and a little time.
An Expert in the Field
I have used the method for “A Do-It-Yourself Face Lift at Home” as outlined in Mildred Carter’s book, Body Reflexology: Healing at Your Fingertips. I noticed a change in the firmness and look of my skin after only several treatments. Carter recommends the DIY method to anyone but says that it “works especially well for middle-aged women.” She also states that it is important to keep skin moisturized for maximum results.
The actual procedure is a little tricky the first time as there are many reflex points on the face that you have to find. It’s not something that you can do in five minutes right before work (then again, neither is getting drugged, cut, sewn back up, and recovered from surgery) . This is an investment of concentrated time for the betterment of your health and beauty. I use it as part of the “me time” I allow myself a couple times a week. We are worth it, ladies.
How to Get Started
Other than me typing out the entire chapter right here on the blog, I think the best way for you to get this information is to buy or borrow the book yourself.
6 Good Reasons Why You NEED to Buy That Book
• You can take your time with the procedure.
• You will also get to take advantage of the other wonderful reflexology treatments covered in the book. For example, the one for sagging breasts is probably the best thing I’ve ever done for my “girls”.
• There’s a treatment for enhancing libido.
• There’s a treatment for beautiful hair.
• It will pay for itself after one self-treatment.
• It can help with that icky stuff that happens when you go through menopause.
I’m not going to beg you to buy the book; Amazon doesn’t pay associates that much. It’s just a way for you to get really great skin and a tighter face that doesn’t nearly fall off when you bend over. It’s up to you. You decide. I won’t badger you about it, anymore. No, not me.
If you don’t care for this post about reflexology, you will just have to join us tomorrow for another “No Surgery Face Lift” tip. You could just subscribe so you don’t miss anything. Friday’s post will blow you away! Be well-be beautiful.

The Wake-up Call
This week has been one of self-evaluation for me. I attended two health/anti-aging seminars that absolutely shattered my delusional mind-set that I was actually healthy. It’s like the denial that comes when you know that you’ve gained weight but think if you don’t get on the scale it won’t be true. Well, I was doing that with my state of health.
I know that I’m better than some but worse than others. But it’s not about comparing yourself to anyone else. We all have to work out our lives, including our heath and fitness levels, with almost a selfish attitude. We must choose daily to do the right things for our bodies…no matter what.
At one of the seminars, I was introduced to LiveStrong.com. I was extremely impressed with the detailed information and technology available at no cost to anyone who wants to be healthier. Please visit the site; you kind of have to see it for yourself. Anyway, I am going to use the site to help track my progress in some food and fitness areas.
At the other seminar, I had a scan done that checked the body’s carotenoid level (working antioxidants). It was not pretty. A low score means Kellie needs to work on some things.
My Quest: The 90 Day Health Challenge
I have dared myself to be a better example to my family and to you, my readers. Over the next several months and beyond, I am going to hopefully undo some of the bad habits I have accumulated over the past year since the birth of my daughter. This self-challenge includes my blogging about my progress and any set backs that I may have. My goals are the following:
- Detox
- Lose 10 pounds
- Increase Cardiovascular endurance
- Increase my Cartenoid score every month
- Tone and strengthen weak muscles (especially abdominal)
- Reduce headaches (or irradicate them altogether) =)
- Create a better healthy lifestyle for myself and my family
- Help others do the same
This Week’s Goals
• First, I need to detox by drinking more good water, getting some colonics, and drinking fresh juices.• Second, I need to get on some absorbable supplements. I will share more about this when I start them.
• Third, I need to eat more raw foods.
I Dare You To Join Me
I will share a part of my own journey to better health every Saturday for the next 3 months so I am accountable to you. Please join me in this important quest. Let me know if you plan to take my “90 Day Health Challenge” so we can support each other. Be well.

I started the day much to early for a blogger and with a hellacious headache. Then while checking my stats, my email, and my comments, I was lead to A Bit of Happy. I have visited this wonderfully whimsical site before but didn’t realize how significant it would be to me. I watched a video “Free Hugs Campaign” and instantly a wide smile broke out on my face. Thanks to the inspiring post of Christy, I felt better. The power of a smile.
There is no doubt in my mind that joy, humor, and the simple act of smiling can have a huge impact on our health and well-being. It is no mistake that as a part of their treatment, cancer patients (especially children) are exposed to humorous videos and books. Joy has the ability to bring out the best in every person; it has no limits, no boundaries, and no prejudices. It’s always right there waiting for you to absorb its life-changing properties. Get some today and be well.

I’ve spent some days, weeks, and even months lying in bed waiting to feel better from various ailments. So, I know what it’s like to be sick. It sucks! What’s more, not knowing why you are sick is even worse. Doctor after doctor offer no answers, and the quest is exhausting, to say the least. Because of several of these quests, I have learned a little about what can make a woman ill. Though the following information may not now- or ever- pertain to you, I recommend that you hear me out.
The Onion Concept
Keep in mind that your health comes in layers (like an onion), and the goal is to reach the center. As you skillfully peel each problem away, you reveal the next. This process can take months and sometimes years to accomplish. Unfortunately, most don’t make it that far – like me (still working on it). But with the help of a wellness expert and lots of patience, you can find the center (your true health). In considering the following five culprits to sickness and disease, make it a lifestyle to always strive for a better you. In other words, keep peeling.
1. Too much Estrogen
Most women worry about not having enough of this needed hormone (especially those who are menopausal and beyond). Well, to the surprise of many, I forthrightly say this; you could have too much. I discovered that there are two types of estrogen in our bodies. The gentle kind that brings us children, keeps us looking feminine, and prevents hot-flashes is called hydroxyestrone. We want this stuff. And we want it now. However, on the ugly side of estrogen’s family, you have 16 alpha-hydroxyestrone (a wayward sister) that damages cells and can promote women specific cancers.
It might be difficult to determine if you have excess estrogen without a test called an Estrogen Metabolism Assessment. Ask your health care provider if they feel you need one. Once you discover where you are with both types of estrogens, you can work on getting things in balance again. With or without the test results, you can start adding these to your diet:
- Broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower
Research by John Hopkins University, as reported in a recent issue of Women’s World magazine, suggests that a substance found in these foods helps convert bad estrogen to the good kind. And “eating just 1/2 a cup a day can cut your ovarian cancer risk by as much as 38%.” That’s worth eating your veggies for. I found some life-changing information in a book about the relationship between belly fat and hormones. Check out From Belly Fat to Belly Flat: How Your Hormones Are Adding Inches to Your Waist and Subtracting Years from Your Life — the Medically Proven Way to Reset Your Metabolism and Reshape Your Body.
2. Mold
Most everyone has heard about the dangers of certain types of mold, but have you checked your own home for this sneaky, health-stealing culprit. The problem with mold is that you may have it without knowing. It can be difficult to find and even harder to get rid of.
We used to live in a home that was in a very damp, wooded area. The extra moisture contributed to the growth of mold all over the property, including in the home’s interior. We were renting the house so to address the problems ourselves was not optional. While we were there, almost every one of us (pets included) developed asthmatic symptoms, frequent viruses, and horrible headaches. Since moving to a new home, the asthma has stopped and we all feel much better.
If you suspect a mold issue in your home or workplace, take action by hiring an environmental specialist to access the space. If you can not afford this service, home test kits are available. Remember, some molds are highly toxic and can be life-threatening. Also, try the following supplements and therapies to aid in respiratory ailments.
- Allerplex - This Standard Process product is a help for lung inflammation due to asthma and allergies. I’ve used it to help strengthen my respiratory system after the stress of a hazardous environment.
- Schizandra - This is an herbal supplement that helps ease the symptoms associated with allergies and environmental irritants.
- Neti Pot - I’ve spoke of this amazing little device before. Sinus irrigation is a wonderful way to eradicate the pain and swelling that comes with allergies and even sinus infections.
3. Dirty Air Ducts
This is something that you might easily forget about so schedule a cleaning on your calendar a year in advance. Dirty air ducts can lead to allergies, frequent viruses, and even bacterial infections if left unattended for long periods. The service is a little pricey but well worth it. Check your local ads for specials and coupons.
4. Candida (Yeast) Overgrowth
This common imbalance plagues vast numbers of people all over the world. Because of the abundance of processed sugars and flour in our diets, it is easy to see how yeast can get out of control. It can be hard to diagnose through any one test. The most efficient way to detect the presence of candida is through a symptom assessment. Your health care provider can offer you more in depth guidance on your specific case. In the meantime, try to cut down on processed foods in general. Also, adding a pro-biotic supplement like acidophiles will help keep you in balance. Also, here’s a trustworthy resource for more information…Yeast Infection No More.
5. Ancestoral Miasms
“In homeopathy, the theory of miasms originates in Hahnemann’s book ‘The Chronic Disease’ which was published in 1828. The three miasms given in that work are held to be responsible for all disease of a chronic nature and to form the foundation or basis for all disease in general.”
This might be a concept hard to grasp for some, but I encourage you to research the topic for yourself. I was first introduced to the term “miasm” while undergoing bio-feedback testing. The practitioner described it as simply a genetic weakness that is passed to us by our ancestors. There is, of course, more to it than that; for the sake of time and space, we will just touch on it here. It is the belief of some natural physicians that these weaknesses can cause an alarming number of ailments and even terminal diseases like cancer and diabetes. *** The good news, there is a way to gently care for these weaknesses through homeopathic treatment.
***A Doctor of Naturopathy like, Dr. Terri Hawkins-Fox, can give you more information on homeopathic remedies.

Women’s Life Link would like to introduce Dr. Terri Hawkins-Fox. She has been a memorable contributor to my life through her caring, wise way in which she conducts herself as a doctor and a woman. Terri is a wife, mother, grandmother, and currently owns and operates the Indianapolis wellness center Natural Rejuvenation.
I have had the wonderful opportunity to personally experience her practice that includes colon hydrotherapy, therapeutic massage, and even biofeedback technology that powerfully divulges weaknesses in the body. I consider her a mentor, friend, and a pioneer in holistic natural health care. Please read on for a personal look into the life of this amazing, beautiful woman!
WLL – Tell us about yourself (not what you do).
Terri - First and foremost, I’m a mother & grandmother. I’m privileged & deeply honored to run along side my two girls, and I do so in “total awe”. I’m a Holistic Doctor. I live & breathe it – it’s not what I do, it’s who I am – it’s my passion and drive. Although I miss the mark on a daily basis, it’s what drives my adrenaline. Understanding the Master Mind – the Mind/Body connection is definitely a driving force in me. I’m Spiritual, but I’m not religious. I’m open minded, but I’m not led. I’m a strong women, and yet I have weaknesses. I’m passionate & kind, but I can walk away. I seek the unknown, yet strive for balance in every moment.
WLL - I feel inspired already.
WLL – What is your life focus at this time?
Terri - As it will always be – I’m in constant motion to protect my girls emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually. To help them find their path and to walk with them in harmony as long as I can before passing. In business – it’s an extension of the same. I’m fortunate enough to have a profession that I don’t have to show up at – I carry it within me. I do the things I love and just share them.
WLL – What was the most life changing moment of your life?
Terri - There have been many. Each time I have taken a new path or direction, it has been profound. Sometimes enlightening, sometimes regretful – but most certainly a learning experience. A dear friend once told me, “if you don’t want to move through the challenges now – don’t worry, you will be presented with the opportunity again later”. I found that to be totally true.
WLL - What do you think is the most difficult thing for women to change about themselves?
Terri - What they are “taught” about beauty. In our society we are basically taught that a man’s worth is his income or assets, and a women’s worth is her outer beauty. Sad, but true that most judgment stems from that belief system. If women could just see themselves as strong & powerful, not weak & repressed, then they would begin to blossom into the “true” women that they are.
WLL - I hope we can help change that together.
WLL - How do you keep healthy & fit?
Terri - I’m asked this question daily because of my profession. I see health & fitness as a lifestyle, not a diet or a temporary fix. Every person requires
a different protocol because of needs and levels of attainment they wish to achieve. What might be wonderful for one, may not be for another. My personal health regime consist of making 3-4 quarts of freshly made fruit & vegetable juices daily; with this I have raw foods – also super foods. Super foods are algae, flax, herbal & homeopathic substances. I also grow & drink various herbal teas. I make almond milk, and buy young coconuts for the water content inside. I have sprouts, and I make fermented foods.
I’m a firm believer in colonic’s – which of course I do here in the office. For fitness – I do 1 ½ hours of stretching & weight bands 3 days a week, and the other 3 days I do 1 hour of various aerobic exercise. Sunday I use to do combinations, but lately I have turned my attention to what my husband might like to do on that one particular day because it is the only day we have off together.
WLL – How do you think other women see you?
Terri - Passionate, loving, kind, energetic, trust worthy, caring, focused, extreme, strong willed, determined – maybe even to the point of being bull headed.
WLL – What challenges are you facing right now? How do you plan to deal with them?
Terri – I’ve been married for 4 years, and 2 of those years my mother in-law has had to live with us. She’s schizophrenic paranoid. I have her with me at work all day, and at night. The challenge is having personal time alone, and also with my husband. Whenever possible my husband and I meet for lunch or go out to a quiet dinner alone. I make it a point to dress up for him – which I love to do anyway. We go to bed at the same time and get up together to have breakfast. We watch movies and cuddle, we take walks, and we are in constant contact all day.
WLL - This sounds like an example of “working at marriage” that we all should follow.
WLL – Who or what inspires you?
Terri - That’s an easy question – my mother. She’s past over, but she was a spiritual women, a forerunner in Holistic Medicine, a self made business woman, and my greatest mentor in every aspect. When business and life itself gets me down, when I’m afraid and don’t know what to do, my mother’s voice always rings in my head. I hear the things she repeatedly told me before she died. These words have become the “Rules of Life” establishing the bases of every business adventure and life challenges I’m faced with. So let me briefly share these with you.
SHE WOULD SAY:
You can do anything you so desire if you want to bad enough – Believe It! There is nothing stopping you, but yourself. Simply move out of the way.
Do you want to win or do you want to be right?
This is a very powerful tool. Many times we know we’re right, but to “Win” a situation we must make maneuver the situation in a positive win-win situation.
Love them more!!!
Those that we often come in contact with can be hard to deal with at times – instead of persecuting, instead of being angry back, realize that many carry with them much hurt and pain, and they need our love and acceptance more. Love them, and they will find their way back.
Do whatever it takes.
Many times we set out on a new adventure, or one already set in motion. In order to succeed, go forth knowing that you will do “whatever it takes” – no less.
Everything is a trade off.
With everything, there are attachments – realize that. When we have children we love them dearly. We give our time, our energy, our soul, our money. When we do something simple as buy a sports car – we give up the back seat. It’s about what we want to experience at any given time.
It’s all in how you perceive it.
If you think the people in your town are wonderful, charming, kind, and giving – you will find that to be so in the next town. If you think they are nosey, boisterous, hateful, and loud – you will find that in the next town as well. If you want to change something – first change your perception of all that is around you. Change yourself!
If you can’t manage a quarter you can’t manage a million dollars.
What we do on a small scale is evidence of what we will do on a larger scale. This applies to everything in our lives.
We are all A+ students.
My mother would say that there are those who are audio, some visual, some that need the stimulation of feeling and requiring hands on – and then again some need various combinations. But “EVERYONE” can be taught. If they are not learning – they need to be taught with different stimulation in order to achieve the information. We are all A+ students!
WLL - That was about 6 posts all rolled into one. You are an amazing woman and now we know why. I wish I could have met your mother.
WLL – If you could say one thing to women that you knew would help them live better lives, what would it be?
Terri - To radiate true beauty and peace – you must allow yourself to be who and what you are – do not compromise this. Realize that you are unique and special and worthy of love on every level.
WLL – Any Regrets?
Terri - Yes. I regret letting fear overcome me. Fear of not being loved, accepted, wanted, and appreciated. Fear of missing the mark, fear of not being perfect. I have found that if we can walk through our fears, they will dissipate. Where there is fear – love can not enter. They don’t occupy the same space.

You Have to Try This
I wanted to tell you about a therapy that most don’t know even exists. It’s called the Graston Technique ®. It is a manual process that uses a unique set of stainless steel or ceramic instruments “designed to break up scar tissue buildup in body areas such as the shoulder or wrist, which are often associated with acute or chronic soft tissue injuries. Soft tissues include skin, muscle, nervous (neurological), and connective tissues.”
“Examples of soft tissue injuries include strains, sprains, subluxations (partial dislocation of joints), carpal tunnel syndrome, and repetitive stress injury. Treatment using the Graston Technique® involves sliding a stainless steel instrument designed for a particular body part over the surface of the skin in a back and forth motion. Generally, advocates suggest several Graston Technique® sessions for treatment of soft tissue injuries,” according to Wellness.com.
My Daughter’s Injury
I was fortunate enough to experience this amazing treatment first hand through my chiripractor, Dr. Michael Tuckey. When he first recommended it for my daughter after a car accident, I was sceptical but open as she was in a lot of pain after being rear-ended by an overzealous teen driver. Her treament was extensive because of the amount of soft tissue damage; in the end she and I were pleasantly surprised by the results.
Personal Experience
I actually had Dr. Tuckey use the technique on my own neck and trapezoid muscles that carry the brunt of stress and mommy-tension. I experienced an immediate release of tight muscles and new range of motion. The only negative thing I could have done without was the awful bruising the treatment caused. Don’t worry though, it’s normal and goes away in a couple of days. The red, splotchy marks (they look like hickeys) are from your body reacting to the stimuli by releasing toxins and breaking up scar tissue. It shows that it’s working.
The Other Daughter
We had another opportunity to let Dr. Tuckey go at with his state-of-the-art ceramic tools. When my teenage daughter sustained a bad shoulder injury from volleyball, he recommended that she undergo some Graston along with chiropractic adjustments and physical therapy. She too was able to recover faster from her injury because of the Graston Technique ®.
Benefits of Graston
•Decreases overall time of treatment
•Fosters faster rehabilitation/recovery
•Reduces need for anti-inflammatory medication
•Resolves chronic conditions thought to be permanent (this is HUGE!)
•Patient continues to engage in everyday activities
I highly recommend that you at least get more information about Graston, especially if you have ongoing soft tissue pain from Fibromyalgia or an injury that left you with scar tissue. If you are in the Indianapolis, Indiana area, contact Dr. Michael Tuckey via his golf fitness website or at Linwood Chiropractic (317) 351-0345 for an appointment. Be well.

Achieving good health is not as easily accomplished as we all would want. Though making true lifestyle change is the way to go to ensure lasting results, I’ve put together another list of instant health boosters to get you moving in the right direction. These are things that you can do that don’t require a lot of thought or energy to be effective. Please pass this article on to other women who need it….who are we kidding? Everyone needs health!
1. Let it Rain - Spending just a few minutes out in the rain (or under the protection of your porch) in the negative ions (that by the way are uplifting) will help you to breathe in more oxygen.
The Health Boost: More oxygen in your system will bring a new elevation to your mood and give an increased ability to concentrate.
2. Purifying Skin Smoothie - Mash 1-2 blackberries, 3 Tbs. yogurt, 1 Tbs. honey, and 1 drop of vanilla extract to make a paste. Apply to a clean face with fingertips. Leave on 15 minutes, then remove with a damp washcloth. Rinse face with cool water and dry with a dark-colored towel.
The Health Boost: Blackberries potent antioxidants minimize free redical damage and signs of aging. They can also be quite calming after a stressful day.
3. Vitamin C Power - If you don’t already take a vitamin C supplement, start tomorrow. Research shows that just 1,ooo mg. daily can slow the release of corticosterone, a hormone that is in abundance when we are stressed.
The Health Boost: Less stress means a healthier heart and blood pressure. Not to mention, a happier home.
4. Shed a Few - Research shows that women who are at or near their ideal weight have a less chance of developing Ovarian Cancer. Extra estrogen is produced in fat and may encourage cancer growth.
The Health Boost: Losing a few pounds will give your body a reason to rejoice! Your heart doesn’t have to pump as hard to get the blood everywhere; you have more energy; they had me at the cancer thing.
5. Bring on the Vino - Some know that wine has long been considered a digestive aid. Well, in addition to that, doctors say that it’s bacteria-busting capabilities are far better than bismuth salicylate (a typical stomach remedy like Pepto-Bismol). Just 4 oz. a day can help protect you against food poisoning and flu bugs.
The Health Boost: If you have ever had food poisoning, you know what happens. It’s not something that you ever want; just drink the damn wine already.
6. Wear Shades for a Bright Future - Wearing sunglasses year round will help protect your retinas from the sun’s UV rays. Significant exposure can increase your chances of developing macular degeneration later in life.
The Health Boost: Better vision for longer. Need I say more.

With about a thousand different views (or more) on the way in which the six types of fats (good or bad) affect our bodies, most women don’t truly understand how to balance their diets. Though it is important to know what each of the fats do and where they come from, I am going to focus primarily on Essential Fatty Acids for this post.
Fats 101
For the sake of those of you who may not know what the fat types are, the following brief explanation should give you the basics.
Monounsaturated fats
These should make up most of the fats one eats. Monounsaturated fat remains liquid at room temperature but may start to solidify in the refrigerator. Foods high in monounsaturated fat include olive, peanut and canola oils. Avocados and most nuts also have high amounts of monounsaturated fat.
Polyunsaturated fats
These should be used in moderation. Polyunsaturated fat is usually liquid at room temperature and in the refrigerator. Foods high in polyunsaturated fats include vegetable oils, such as safflower, corn, sunflower, soy and cottonseed oils.
Saturated fats
These should be least used; however, recent studies have shown that they may not be as bad as we have been told for years. Saturated fat. Usually solid or waxy at room temperature, saturated fat is most often found in animal products — such as red meat, poultry, butter and whole milk. Other foods high in saturated fat include coconut, palm and other tropical oils.
Partially hydrogenated fats and chemically produced trans-fatty acids
These should be avoided. Trans fat, also referred to as trans-fatty acids, comes from adding hydrogen to vegetable oil through a process called hydrogenation. This makes the fat more solid and less likely to turn rancid. Hydrogenated fat is a common ingredient in commercial baked goods — such as crackers, cookies and cakes — and in fried foods such as doughnuts and french fries. Shortenings and some margarines also are high in trans fat.
Essential fatty acids
These are encouraged. Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats found mostly in seafood. Good sources of omega 3′s include fatty, cold-water fish, such as salmon, mackerel and herring. Flaxseeds, flax oil and walnuts also contain omega-3 fatty acids, and small amounts are found in soybean and canola oils.
The Different Essential Fatty Acids: EFA’s
Now that you know more about the different types of fats, let’s look at the one that we all should purposely add to our diets: Essential fatty acids or Omega-3 fatty acids. First, you need to know that there are two different kinds of Omega’s. While the Omega 3′s are gravely deficient in our diets; Omega 6′s are consumed in quantities that actually threaten our health, especially in the United States where vegetable seed oils like safflower, corn, and soy are used heavily.
To ensure a proper balance, you should consume a ratio of 1:1 Omega-3 to Omega-6. Wow, we are really missing that one by an unhealthy mile! According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, “The typical American diet tends to contain 14 – 25 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids.” Research suggests that this practice could attribute for the increase of many kinds of diseases, especially those that include inflamation as the primary factor.
Health Benefits of Proper Omega-3 Intake
- Helps fight and prevent heart disease, cancer, depression, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, diabetes, hyperactivity and many other diseases
- Increases your energy level
- Increases your immunity to common colds and flus.
- Lowers a woman’s risk for pre-mature labor, low birth weight, and other pregnancy complications
Beauty Benefits
- Helps reduce acne
- Reduces skin inflammation
- Makes skin soft and supple
- Reduces dry and scaly skin
- Reduces premature wrinkles and skin aging
While a helpful form of Omega-3 can be found in flax seed oil, most physicians will recommend a type containing DHA and EPA that can only be found in fish oil. However, because of the Mercury content, many are switching to Krill oil. This Omega-3/anti-oxidant powerhouse is more easily absorbed by your body so you need less to meet your EFA requirement. It also does not cause the gross and embarrassing burbing that other fish oils can.
Balancing the Omega-3 and Omega-6: How Much is Enough?
Because your current state of health, your diet, risk factors for disease, and even your medications can be factors in determining your needs, this is really something that you should talk to your health care provider about. However, eating a balanced diet with foods naturally containing EFA’s and even basic supplementation is likely enough for most people. Be well-be beautiful.

“It is always the simple things that change our lives. And these things never happen when you are looking for them to happen. Life will reveal answers at the pace life wishes to do so. You feel like running, but life is on a stroll. This is how God does things.” This Donald Miller quote describes how I felt when I discovered some simple products made by a wonderful, simple woman.
The Discovery
Our not-by-chance meeting happened while I was checking out the vendor area of a local festival. Naturally, I was drawn to the booth that displayed a grand selection of soaps that I could smell from yards away. One by one, I took in the heavenly scents of the Cinnamon, Sandalwood, Vanilla, and many other luscious varieties of the all-natural, homemade bars.
A New Friend and Business Contact
I found myself relaxed and thankful that I stopped by the mini-store. The owner, Janis Rogers, immediately began to talk to me about her products and found that I was more than interested in listening. We continued a conversation that developed into the networking I love and drives this website. I asked Janis if she would allow me to review products and interview her for a Women’s Life Link post. She agreed!
The Product Trial
First, let me say; I have never used any homemade soaps with which I was completely satisfied. So, going into this, I was already skeptical. I chose the Sandalwood/Pachtouli variety for my review (two of my favorite scents). The first night I decided to do something that was a long shot; I washed my face with soap. You have to understand that I’m a skin care system die-hard. I just don’t use soap on my forty-something face- maybe the body, but definitely not the face.
Well, the results shocked me (pleasantly). The rich, milky bar cleansed my face with care. It didn’t dry it out; it didn’t cause those flaky damage paths that most soaps leave on your skin; and it did not disappoint this connoisseur of fine skin-care lines. WOW! My face was smooth, clean, and ready for the next of Jan’s recommended products.
Something Amazing
I was excited about this one as I had tried some on my hand at the festival. Monoi de Tahiti, she calls it. The oil came in an understated bottle and most would likely pass it up without a second look if it hadn’t been out there to try. Janis also explained its origins which intrigued me.
She informed me that the secret of Monoi do Tahiti lies in the delicate 100% natura
l vegetable blend that is extracted from the rich Tahitian Tumu Ha’ari “Cocos Nucifera) palm tree and from the local “Tiare” (Gardenia Tahitensis) flowers. Together they create a rich, non-greasy emollient/moisturizer that penetrates quickly into the skin and acts as a natural barrier against dehydration- the major cause of wrinkles.
A Little Goes a Long Way
I only needed a few drops to cover my entire face and neck, which really didn’t matter; I could have used the whole jar and not been out much. The sample size retails for only $5.00. Again, I was astounded at the beautiful results. My face felt devine! Properly moisturized, not too much; not too little. What’s more, I had a distinct glow that rarely comes with any creme-at any price level.
I have been using the Monoi on my entire body every day since I got it (I have to get some more)! My body is glowing with youthful dewiness, my stretch marks seem to be less noticeable, and I love the mild fragrance that makes me feel pretty. Janis Rogers, you get an A+ for your “scentsational” products!
About the Creator
Jan’s Bath Scentsations/StoneybrookNaturals is a home-based business that keeps Rogers busy with the development of new products and the constant demand for her current line. “I have always been a person who wanted to help others. And, I have always wanted to run my own small business,” said Janis in our recent interview. “I pride myself on my ability to create recipes and to communicate with others about their needs.”
After getting to know Janis a little better, it was easy to see why her products are so special. She runs her business with integrity and measures a dose of love, kindness, and faith into every batch of homemade soap. This simple, Indiana woman may not wear the latest fashions or have a cutting edge web design, but she delivers a superior product. This is evident by looking at the faces of both her and Charlie (her husband). The middle-aged couple could pass for much younger as their skin is pure, smooth, and without the usual wrinkles that come with the territory.
It was personal need that got the business started. “I wanted to create something my husband and I could use on our skin that would be healthy. Because I was always intrigued about how people made soap in the pioneer days, Iwanted to try it. I discovered that by using today’s methods, and utilizing nature’s natural plant oils, a great bar of soap could be made.”
Beauty Tips From Jan
Janis advises women to “drink lots of water, get plenty of sleep, and use a natural skin-loving soap. Your skin is your largest organ and it needs to be treated kindly. Many conditions are irritated by using the wrong soap.” She goes on to say, “Don’t spend too much time in the sun; and if going out in the sun, use a sunblock. Use makeup in moderation.” Women’s Life Link agrees with her simple plan for natural beauty. Great job!
In Conclusion
I am sold on Jan’s products! I’m not saying I will axe my beloved Aveda line, but I sure will add a few of her soaps and definitely the Monoi de Tahiti. Oh, I almost forgot…there was another pleasant benefit of the soap; it made the bathroom smell wonderful! Please visit Jan’s Bath Scentsations to order her wonderful, organic products.

Most women, at some time in their lives, experience neck pain. Though there are many causes for the pain that can sometimes be debilitating, the most common ongoing culprits are poor posture and positioning of the head while doing tasks like computer work and reading. Trust me; I know. I have suffered from chronic neck problems since my early adulthood. And, yes, as I have stated in other posts, I had horrible posture as a child and teen.
Another Contributor: Stress
All we have to do is take a look at the lifestyle of women to understand how neck pain can weisel its way into our lives. Ooh…here’s that word again, STRESS! You know we can’t get away from it; it’s like a maniacal bandit just waiting to pounce when the time is right. If you’re like me, you carry stress in your neck and shoulders. By the end of a rough day, you can literally feel like cutting off the upper half of your body.
This kind of pain is primarily muscle tension but can lead to other cervical problems if it persists for a long period. Muscles actually return to a position and tension if they have been trained to…purposely or not. Though this phenomena is great for athletes and musicians…not so much for those just trying to make it through their day without pain.
Other Side Effects of Neck Pain
As if the ache, the stabbing, and the stiffness wasn’t enough; let’s add numbness and tingling, headaches, and a couple of pinched nerves. Yes, these can all be associated with some types of neck issues. Though most of these things can be attributed to a plain old neck ache, you should let a chiropractor or other medical practitioner evaluate your condition if the symptoms are severe or don’t go away.
Chronic Pain: An Ugly Problem
Well, here I go connecting your health with your beauty again – someone has to do it. I know something about chronic pain; and I know how badly it can affect your looks. I’m still trying to reduce the forehead wrinkles and frown lines - without Botox, I might add – from years of neck, shoulder, and head pain. Our bodies can’t help but react negatively to outside influences that cause pain and malfunctions. It is its way of telling us that something is wrong and need to make a change. So pay attention!
What Can Be Done?
Hopefully, you know your body well enough to determine how severe your neck pain is and whether you need to see a doctor. But, just in case you don’t, you better make an appointment with a chiropractor or osteopath as soon as you can. If you are in the knowing group, and have determined no outside help is necessary, you can try the following remedies.
Stretching
Remember, your neck is a sacred, fragile part of your body as it holds up your head, connects your brain stem to your spine, and contains the most mobile joints in your body, according to Dr. Michael Tuckey, D.C. of Linwood Chiropractic in Indianapolis, Indiana. Therefore, any stretching that you do can be as harmful as it can be helpful if you don’t use care.
You should always approach stretching with gentleness, especially when it comes to your neck and spine. Because this is so important, I am sending you to a video demo of how to properly perform neck stretches.
Topical Treatments That Work
Though not an all-natural product, one of the best topical treatments that I have used is Tiger Balm’s newbie, Neck & Shoulder Rub. I have had stellar results for shoulder tension and the tight muscles in my neck. You just rub it on, and within seconds you feel a tingly sensation that is cool and warm at the same time. I spend hours on the computer as a writer so the instant relief that this non-greasy product provides is invaluable. The only negative proponent of the creme is that it does contain Propylparaben and Propylene Glycol; however, that is something each of you have to weigh against the positive benefits.
Another home remedy you can try is soaking in a tub of Epsom Salts. It’s easy and can be extremely comforting for tired aching muscles. Not only that, a 20-minute soak can also help you eliminatetoxins that exacerbate your pain and discomfort.
You can also use an ice pack for neck strain or overuse. Apply for 10-minutes every half hour for the first two hours and as needed after that. For a stiff neck that you “just wake up with”, try moist heat. Standing in a hot shower for 10-minutes or applying a heated, damp towel should give you some relief.
These tips are just an overview of the possible causes and remedies for neck pain, so, by all means, add your comments to expand upon the topic. Remember to treat your neck with respect, and give it the attention it deserves. See a doctor if you need to. Be well.

I am always looking for natural alternatives to conventional medicine. I figure our bodies have enough to do without bombarding them with harsh chemicals and toxins. There are some “miracle cures” out there that simply do not deliver the goods; however, the following remedies are some exceptions I’ve found over the years. If the need arises, please give them a try. Also, please share any remedies that you have used and loved.
1. Apples, Cucumbers, Aloe Vera, and Potatoes
What do these four random fruit/veggies/plant have in common? Well, the next time you get a sunburn or even a mild regular burn try dabbing it with any one of the four. Of course, you have to peel them first.
2. Banana Peel, Onion, and Baking Soda
Another strange bunch, but oddly they can accomplish the same task. The banana peel and the onion can be applied to a splinter, cut with glass still in it, or an embedded stinger and actually aid in bringing the foreign object to the surface. Just cut a piece large enough to cover the area and bandage it for about an hour. The anti-inflammatory compounds draw the intruder out and also aid in healing.
Baking soda can be applied to insect bites and stings to bring out stingers and venom. Simply make a thick compound with the baking soda and a few drops of water; apply it directly to the sting, and let it set for 30-60 minutes.
3. Beer
Did you ever notice how the mosquitoes swarm around you while drinking beer on your deck or patio in the summer? Well, it turns out that they are extremely attracted to the popular party beverage. So, try setting several nealy empty bottles around the yard and watch those bugs go right to them- away from you and your guests.
4. Vinegar
Another great remedy for sunburn, this common household item can actually take the sting right out of your overexposed skin. Apply directly to the burned area with a cotton ball or gauze pad. Reapply as necessary. Remember to apply some form of moistue (lotion) after the vinegar as it may dry out your skin too much.
5. Oatmeal and Yogurt
Both of these food products have the ability to curb itching and inflammation due to poison ivy, chicken pox, yeast infections, and other minor skin irritations. Oatmeal can be added to a warm bath for an all over treatment or applied as a paste to smaller infections.
Yogurt is especially good for the itch associated with yeast overgrowth. The acidophiles within the yogurt actually helps bring the balance back to your body. You can apply this directly to any affected area. I used this for my daughter when she had a yeast infection on her bottom as an infant.
